Misidentifications

In April 2006, a few years after the documentary was released, to the consternation of Fernando"s family and Caiozzi, the Asociación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos (AFDD, Association of Relatives of the Detained-Disappeared) informed the public that a Spanish investigating team had determined that IML had incurred serious errors during the exhumation and identification of the bodies. Lorena Pizarro, the president of AFDD, demanded that the Chilean State assume, once and for all the responsibility of this horrible error and dedicate all its resources to establishing the identity of the remains exhumed (Equipo Nizkor, 2006, p. 1).

Miguel Olivares Mori, Fernando's brother, describes the emptiness he felt when he was told about the misidentification:

This is all so macabre, this is all unimaginable. We had regained some peace, we had a place to leave a flower, and we knew he was there, in the same niche where our father and grandmother lie. But now we don't know who occupies his place. Is it Fernando or another detained disappeared? Who is there?

(Valencia, 2006, p. 1)
